United States Forest Service Libby Ranger District of the Kootenai National Forest 31374 US Highway 2, Libby, MT Notice of Public Availability The Libby Ranger District of the Kootenai National Forest announces the availability of the Mitchell Jack- son Project Area, Lincoln County, Montana Draft Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis for public review The Mitchell Jackson Project Area generally encircles the former Libby Vermiculite Mine that is within Operable Unit 3 (OU3) of the Libby Asbestos Superfund Site. The site is located east-northeast of Libby, Montana, along Montana Highway 37 and consists of lands in all or parts of Townships 30, 31, and 32 North and Ranges 29, 30, and 31 West Principle Meridian of Montana in Lincoln County, Montana. The interior boundary of the site is the current OU3 boundary. The scope of the Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) includes vegetation and transportation management activities. Two removal action alternatives are identified, and both include regeneration harvest that would create openings exceeding 40 acres in size. The Draft EE/CA and related documents are available online through the Forest Service webpage for the project: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/koo- tenai/landmanagement/projects/?cid=fseprd1135230. The Libby Ranger District of the Kootenai National Forest will hold a public meeting on May 29, 2024, from 5:30-7 pm at the Kootenai National Forest Supervisor's Office at 31374 US Highway 2, Libby, MT to discuss the EE/CA. There will be a presentation followed by a question-and-answer session. The EPA has defined a human health risk for firefighters inside the Libby Asbestos Superfund Site OU3 during fire-fighting activities (dry mop-up). This project seeks to modify the fuels condition on adjacent lands to influence fire intensity across the landscape and reduce the potential for fires moving into OU3. The desired outcome is to reduce hazardous fuels and create a lower risk of high tensity, large-scale, and fast-moving wildfires in this area. Public comments on the Draft EE/CA will be accepted for thirty (30) days starting May 29, 2024, until June 28, 2024. Verbal comments may be taken during the public meeting. Written comments should be sent to: comments-northern-kootenai-libby@usda.gov or 31374 US Highway 2 Libby, MT 59923 Please address comments to Nate Gassmann and include "Mitchell Jackson Project" in the subject line. More information is available online at the project webpage or by contacting Nate Gassmann, District Ranger, at the Canoe Gulch Ranger Station at 406-293-7773. 181058 United States Forest Service Libby Ranger District of the Kootenai National Forest 31374 US Highway 2 , Libby , MT Notice of Public Availability The Libby Ranger District of the Kootenai National Forest announces the availability of the Mitchell Jack- son Project Area , Lincoln County , Montana Draft Engineering Evaluation / Cost Analysis for public review The Mitchell Jackson Project Area generally encircles the former Libby Vermiculite Mine that is within Operable Unit 3 ( OU3 ) of the Libby Asbestos Superfund Site .
